Cash Refund

I bought 5 boxes of wood flooring from Storeys Carpets. I gave them my measurements and the man worked out how much I would need. I paid cash, the fitters fitted it and I am left with a spare box that hasn't been opened.
They won't give me a cash refund. Are they allowed to only give me a credit note?
