Just wondering....as I am about to buy a new PC for my home network, what would be involved in upgrading it to be a host for my OHs website ? Obviously I would get someone more knowledgeable to set it up for me, but what would I need in terms of hardware and software.? We are connected to the outside world via a Virgin Media broadband cable link. BTW
It depends entirely on whether Virgin will allow you to run a server on the package you're on.0 -

An email for life - it only it had been that simple. When we got our Pipex account originally, there was no reason to suppose that the general upheaval and constant shuffling of assets which has taken place since, would occur.
At the time we started out Pipex account, services like gmail and hot mail were but a gleam in some developer's eye. Googlemail did not exist nor did BTInternet nor Virgin Media.
Pipex Solo was a good deal for the small self employed trader, someone current ISPs do not seem much interested in. Pipex had lots of storage on its servers, no arbitrary cut off limits on mail box quotas, ample provision of servers per connected user and, very important for both my OH and me in terms of our business models, no significant restrictions on the number of people you could email on a single mail shot.
My OH runs a number of clubs and being able to send a round robin to all the members without hitting some arbitrary limit in case it was spam, was very useful. He has tried hotmail but this has a limit of around 50 emails in one mail shot and also it is now trying to migrate you to Windows Live.
Nor did we know at the time that we would end up with a range of increasingly distant suppliers with outsourced call centres, poor technical support and in the case of TalkTalk, our original contract sold on with the terms ripped up.
It is always possible to be wise with hindsight.0 -

We are connected to the outside world via a Virgin Media broadband cable link.It is not free, it costs around 170 pds annually and my OH has kept it going as he has his website on it and his email addie... So I agree that TalkTalk business as currently set up is not really suitable for freelancers like me.
What is "it"? What is costing you around £170 annually?
I don't understand what you are paying for here.
You have already got cable broadband from Virgin..
Yet you also pay for business broadband ADSL from TalkTalk, just for the hosting and email.
If so, the hosting and email are legacy services that remain from the days of Pipex, and are essentially provided for free.0 -

If it hasn't, Yahoo has.0 -
We have been online almost from the outset. Back then my OH signed up with Pipex Solo business as it was a good deal for the sole trader, offering web space, clutch of email ids, no restrictions on how many people you could send an email to, etc.
In due course, Pipex got sold on and its original range of services got divided up. The telecoms business got sold to Telewest, then Blueyonder, then Virgin Media. This is who now provide our cable modem access. Meanwhile the Solo business services also got sold on, separately. Most recently they were called Opal which TalkTalk bought last year. They are indeed legacy services but are not free. They have been sold on as a separate deal.
My OH did try to move his web site to Virgin who had also bought ntl but they made such a hash in reconciling web access to former Telewest and ntl customers he had to give up. However he kept on paying for his Solo account because a) it had his email id which he did not want to change and b) held his web site which is very large. Also it allowed him to send out unrestricted emails to his customer base and had a very good webmail service.
It is access to his Pipex Solo services and webspace, now owned by TalkTalk he is paying for. However TalkTalk clearly have no idea what they have bought in the former Pipex userbase and no interest in small traders and want to clear out these customers from their service. That is clear from recent events.
He will have to bite the bullet and transfer his web site sooner rather than later. So what he needs is a service provider with an offering geared to sole traders including several emails, generous web space, good tech support and good webmail. Ideas?0
