Help regarding bank charges made to me in 06

Hi I am being persued by a debt collection agency who claim that I owe Nationwide Building Society £455 on investigation it is from non payment of direct debits and the amount is for bank charges. I have gained statements and the last statement "sent to me" in march 2006 is for £73 statements before that are for £30 fee for unpaid direct debit. Argued I did not receive a letter from Nationwide as I would have obviously cancelled it - no joy. They are claiming for additional costs which they cannot prove as the account was aparantly frozen in March 2006. Any advice would be appreciated just additionally the debt collection agency (Lowells) said it would be pointless me contacting the building society as it is in their hands now
