Advice about Assisted Living

I am not too sure if this is the right place to ask for advice, if not could some please move it.

My son is 21 years old and has decided he would like to try and live an independent life. He has Aspergers Syndrome and has a part time casual job.

He has always stayed at home and I have tried my best to make him as independent as possible and support him in anything he has tried to undertake.

I would be grateful for any advice you might offer and if any other parent has had to deal with type of thing.

You could try looking at the website for your local council (or if you live in a District or Borough on the County Council Website).

Search for 'Supporting People' which should provide you with some options about services in your area. Or at least provide a contact for someone you can speak with to see what is available in your area.

If you have any contact with a Social Worker also speak to them about options.

There are organisations out there which offer supported housing. Not as straight forward as general needs but more like a dating service. Matching ability, suitability, support, property and area so this can be a long winded process or can go very quickly. Work with your sons support to find the best local solution.

I work for a Housing Association which provides accommodation for people with various long term MH & LD. Ranging from group homes with 24 hour care to one & two bed flats or even Shared Ownership. We only cover England south of Derbyshire excluding London. Please PM me if you would like a link for more info.

    Hi Kelpie,

I can't really help you on this one, but if there is an advice line or support group which exists, then they often can put you in contact with people who have had similar questions.

Do a search on Google for available support groups.

    Thank you Oliver.

He has managed to find a couple of supported accommodation agencies that deal with autistic people so he has emailed them for more information.

    Thank you for your post
