Jumping headlights

Hello all,

Today I accidentally jumped the red light. I'm a new driver (passed couple of months ago) and while coming off a roundabout, I heared siren (ambulance) and I checked my rear-view mirror to see where is the ambulance to pull-over while doing that, I didn't realise the lights were red and I jumped it. It is a pedesdrian crossing red lights. I wasn't stopped or anything but the lights had camera on top of them.

I don't mind paying fine, even if it is upto £100/- but I don't want 3 points taken off my license. I feel awful about this.

Will I be penalised? How do those camera's work? please let me know.

  • I might be wrong, but enforcement cameras on traffic lights aren't on top of the camera are they? I think they are a separate camera adjacent to the junction - and they look just like speed cameras.

I think the thing you are referring to is a traffic sensor e.g. for "intelligent" traffic lights that react to traffic flow.

So you *might* be in the clear.
  • AJ is right, they aren't cameras, just infrared sensors, you have got nothing to worry about.

Some do have cameras, and a friend of mine did receive points for jumping some lights.

However, the good majority are just sensors and I wouldn't worry.
  • Thanks everyone. I sincerely hope it is sensor camera and I will be very carefull next time.

btw, sorry about the subject line. I typed headlights instead of red lights.

The Police have 14 days from the date of the alleged offence to serve the registered keeper with a notice of intended prosecution, therefore watch your mail for 14 days from the date of the offence ;) so just sweat it out until the 27th December
