Legal Fees - Any advice?

Hi
Just wondered if anyone could offer any advice on this
I have just bought my first house, was originally dealing with a solicitor where a family friend works, and was told there would be no charges for them putting in a note of interest and offers on houses, after asking for offers to be put in on 15 houses, I still had no house and no one ever contacted me afterwards to tell me whether my offer was accepted or not, I had to keep calling them to find out, so I decided to change solicitors, and on the first house I put an offer in on, it was accepted.
This morning I received a letter from the original solicitor with a bill for £180.
I have been in touch with the friend who works there and she said we have the bill because we changed solicitors, which doesnt seem fair as the only reason the original solicitor would know we had changes was if the friend had told her so.
Can anyone advise where I stand with regard to the £180 bill?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I think you have to lump it. I'm sure the agreement from their end would be that it was a form of discount on the entire sale process, not a freebie. I'm also pretty sure your friend told them because they asked what happened to you.
TBH, I'd be happy to pay just £180 to a bad solicitor that I'd instructed if it meant I was able to instruct a decent one. It means you managed an easier sale than it would have been if if they were still involved. You luckily don't appreciate that now because you found a better solicitor
. The endless months of waiting for a bad one to organise themselves are worth paying much more than £180 to erradicate when you've been through a complete nightmare!
