Shuffle life span ?

Bought my wife an shuffle approx 3 years ago and just recently has started lasting shorter and shorter between charges.
should I throw it away and expect to buy another one or is there anyway of repairing ?

realise it was only £40 and maybe considered a throwaway item

Thanks

  • Three years is what I would have guesstimated the life span to be. At £40 it has had a good life and there is no feasible way to get a better life on the battery.

If you fancy a go at replacing the battery, there are instructions here for the ipod shuffle generation 3.. Find a replacement LiPo cell on ebay, it's also soldered. But if the thing is broken anyway, there's little to lose.

Apple charges $49 for replacing the shuttle battery!

As usual, we see Apple in its true light.. all fur coat and no knickers...

On the hackaday.com website the hackers build a device almost identical to the ipod shuttle for 89c!

Were these hackers paid a salary? Did they have a marketing budget, did they build their version of Itunes? Did they have support in place? Warranty?

    Never mind, eh!

    $69.00 - $0.89 = marketing + "itunes" + support + warranty.

    Hmm... no brainer!

You missed out the 'salary' bit. Funny, that's probably the biggest slice of the pie.

    Import taxes? Nahh,
    Research? Naah, never done that.
Legal people? Nah, we'll just roll with it it our gadget burns down a house!

Oh, you never counted those into your calculation either!

I just painted my bedroom; cost me £12. Mick the painter was going to charge me £100 for doing it. Rip off!

20p for an onion in Tesco? Can grow them myself for free. Rip off!

I bet you say this several times a day.

You should. It's an impressive insult.

Apple recommend on all portable devices that you should allow the battery to drain fully then charge fully once a month.
If your wife is anything like mine, she may have never allowed this to happen. My wife has an iPhone 3GS and an ipod shuffle and started to experience battery problems. A few times of completely draining the battery and charging to 100% again and things seem to be ok...

or it could just be old and need replacing...

I thought so. It made me chuckle enough to thank the post. It isn't nearly as impressive as Apple's margins though.

The worst thing you can do with a lithium battery is to drain it fully.
    See here and here
