Just got back from Oz. Turned on PC - Desktop developed black backgroung - then eventually turned normal. Go online - and computer keeps locking. Ctrl,Del and Alt - only way to get out. Boot up again and I am unstable. Scan - windows not shut down properly - then back to black background.
By the way been using son's laptop down under - visiting site most days - saved £350 on UK car insurance - now I need to print off my vouchers - go to shopping @ tescos. Family down under signing up - think its fantastic - got the free anti virus and firewall and already armed with vouchers for when they visit UK!
Any advice anyone - can't afford new PC at the mo - even with all the money you guys have helped me save!

What is the exact message that you get? When you say "scan", do you mean you are scanning with an antivirus? Which one? Have you checked your firewall settings?Torgwen..........

Mircosoft Scan Disk
Scandisk is now checking Drive C for errors.
Once completed - wallpaper appears minus desktop icons - then disappears - then desktop icons appear on black background - eventually it corrects itself. Then I go online (AOL) and after a while the computer just locks - Ctrl, Alt and Del is the only option. End Task and a blue screen appears telling me I am unstable! Tells me to Ctrl,Alt and Del again and I'm back on the merry go round. Have Shut Down before computer locks and still get the Scandisk message when I start up again. If you can help I really would be grateful.
I think it is suffering from constipation but I don't know where to shove the Exlax. ???0 -

Give it the usual treatment..
empty recycle bin, disk clean up, thorough scandisk, defrag, full virus scan and get rid of AOHell,
sounds like a resource problem more than anything else... at least clearing all the cack and running the basics you'll have a decent starting point to start looking at other options.
Also worth un-installing any junk you don't need before doing the scandisk and defrag0 -
Thanks I'll get onto it now - and if that don't work - I'll resort to the exlax!0

I had a simular problem sometime ago and did all the usual scan disk, disk clean up ,defrag etc.but it still continued to be a pain.
So I made sure all the stuff I did'nt want to loose was backed-up a re-formatted and then partioned my drive.
It runs like a dream now,I also have a reg cleaner too and window washer it helps to keep al the !!!!!! off. ::)
I am by know means technical so hopefully if i have'nt explained this well an expert may put me right in my explanations. ;D
Mine still runs very smooth though ;D0 -
Everyone is being so helpful. Thanks Pat_. How do you reformat and partion your drive? I'm a reg cleaner and window washer but I don't think my methods will help my PC - where do I go to get them for the computer. I have done what scheming gypsy said - still no joy PC must be a couple of stones lighter though - loved his comment about AOHell.0
