Orange Pcs - Poor Poor Poor Customer Service

I recently contacted Orange to cancel my contract but the representative convinced me to have a new handset and start a new 18 month contract.
But she did state that I would have 7 days to request a collection bag if I wasn't happy and the cancellation would revert to the 4th December 2006 ending on 3rd January 2007.
Now the phone arrived but wouldn't connect to the network for 12 hours and even then would simply disconnect and not work for a while, I contacted them 7th December for a collection bag and told 2-3 days for delivery of this.
Today, I call them and they have changed there story, it will take at least a further 10 days for the bag to arrive, then 10 days to process the phone, add on christmas and this is 10 days for them, I then have to give 30 days notice. I have complained that the customer retention person lied to me just to get extra cash out of me and they are simply not interested.
What can I do if they simply keep ignoring my requests to send a collection bag out, they state it will not be accepted without using there bag and they do what they like.
Am I going to held responsible for there incompetance or can I simply write to them complaining and give them 7 days to arrange collection of the handset and cancel the direct debit, if they don't want the handset back what happens.
They claim I am covered and won't pay anything as all calls are recorded but I am not holding my breath, has anyone else had any problems with orange.
Any help appreciated.
