Building Site Insurance

Hi everyone
I posted this on the insurance board earlier today - I wondered if anyone here had any experience of arranging self build insurance for the site, buildings, materials etc etc
Thanks!

Anyone got any tips for which company to go to for Building Site Insurance?
A friend of mine is about to buy a house which requires a total refurbishment and is likely to be unoccupied for at least 9 - 12 months.

So far quotes have been around £600 and a rather eye-watering £900.

The place is currently a shell, is unlikely to be occupied or furnished while the building work is going on. Rebuild cost around 290k.

All advice welcomed!
Thanks

We use an insurance broker. £600 is totally, totally normal for this type of insurance and your build cost is pretty high as well, so £600 isn't bad IMO. I've phoned around in the past but there are very few companies that offer the insurance. It's very specialised and not offered by general insurance companies.

Build Store do one, and I understand that Towergate offer a policy but they were pretty useless when I spoke to them.

Thanks for that - interesting - the lower quote was from Towergate and the higher one from Buildstore.
However, the Buildstore one offers public liability and cover for materials, store areas etc.

Sorry if my post was a bit ambiguous, the 290k figure refers to the value of the property on completion. It is also the current cost to rebuild the property.

Does anyone have any experience of dealing with these cos?

You could try this company: http://www.selfbuildzone.com/

When I was looking for unoccupied property insurance I found them to be extremely helpful and I noticed that they actually specialise in site/new build insurance. Their cover also seems to be comprehensive and includes public and employers liability insurance, etc.

I would also suggest seeing what a broker can come up with and comparing them all.

    Good luck.
