Bank Charge - can they do this?

Hi I need some advice. I have a bank account with Abbey/Santander. Shortly after I got married (3 and a half years ago) I changed banks, but did not close the account down.

It has been £0.88 overdrawn since then, then last month they slapped on a £100 unarranged overdraft fee. I have been told I cannot close the account until I pay the charge and if I do not pay it then it will go on my credit history.

Can they do that? Do I have to suck it up and pay it because I seriously object to paying it.

So 3 and half years ago you left a bank account inactive overdrawn?

Then yes, you should suck up and pay it. T&Cs state overdrafts can be withdrawn at anytime, they are there for short term borrowing. If the account is inactive it's likely they withdrew the overdraft which is why you have been left with these charges.

    A valuable lesson learnt.

Just thought I'd let you know what has happened since my query last week.

I went in to my local branch and explained everything, the staff and Manager there thought it was ridiculous that I was being charged £100 for being overdrawn by 88 pence! Even though I had not used the account in 3 and a half years.

The Manager kindly waivered the charge and allowed me to pay the overdrawn amount and close the account!
