Halifax Charges - never-ending cycle!

I seem to be caught up in a never-ending cycle in my Halifax current account and I'm not sure how to break free of it. (Bit of a long post, sorry, but these are just the facts)
I have 2 accounts in Halifax #1 Cardcash, #2 Current account. My cardcash account used to be my main account when I was younger but opened a current account for everyday banking and was given a £100 overdraft limit. My local branch closed down years ago and costs me £5 in bus fares, 45mins travelling time and 25min queuing time just to make a simple over-the-counter transaction. A complete nightmare cos I don't have the time nor money!
My problem is this: Payments made into my Halifax Current account are quickly eaten up by overdraft charges. A hefty bank charge resulted in my account being overdrawn by £30, but as I was in the process of applying for JSA after being made redundant, I had to wait a few weeks for my claim to be sorted. For 2 weeks, I was in my overdraft until I received JSA, which incurred overdraft charges of £58 which left me with next to nothing to live on.
I know I shouldn't have let it escalate this far but I've had to arrange for my JSA to be put in my cardcash account as after paying my credit cards, I have zero money to spend on food, etc.
I'm constantly in a cycle of: becoming overdrawn - being charged for being overdrawn - being sent over my overdraft limit -being charged additional unauthorised overdraft fees - *JSA gets paid* - bring account back up to £0 balance (possibly adding some extra ££) - being charged for the previous month's overdraft use.....etc...
Paying £50-80 per month out of a £240 JSA is causing me to fall behind in my other repayments and borrow from my parents. My dad passed away last week and now my mum is fending for herself on a basic rate bereavement allowance. Halifax won't even let me close/freeze my account or anything like that because I constantly have outstanding charges from the previous month.
I've tried a 'lump sum deposit' method, paying enough to cover all charges with surplus cash, but again, this left me with no food or telephone for 2 weeks. Again, there were apparently outstanding charges.
Surely Halifax can take some responsibility for this mess? I feel like a complete idiot

Absence is as important as abundance.
