Underfloor insulation. Is it necessary when you lay carpets?

Hi,

I am in the process of buying a victorian home with a suspended wooden floor on the ground floor. I intend on installing a thick underlay and carpet and I was wondering whether it made sense to also install insulation under the floor boards?

I would have thought that the underlay and carpet would be enough, but a friend told me that 25% of the heat will be lost from the floors.

Thanks Y'all

Its entirelyup to you. The carpet will certainly reduce heat loss through the floor, but insulation under it will reduce the heat los even further.

However, if you are looking just ttake th ewfloor boards up, insulate and then put the floor boards back, then this is quite a costly exercise and it will take many years to recove the cost via reduced heating costs.

If you are having other works done in the house and the floor boards have to come up, then its sensible to insulate at that point, but not just for the sake of it.

if you can get in under the floors it's well worth doing, putting in as much insulation as you can under an old floor like that can make a massive difference to the drafts you feel
