Redundancy

Options
Hi

I will try and keep this brief....

3 weeks ago a colleague of mine was given a redundancy letter.
On thursday of this week i asked my manager if they were going to replace my apprentice that had left on his own accord over 1 month ago.. he told me that he didnt think he was being replaced and that he had received a call from HR asking for my home address... i asked why as its on my file already. he suggested that they had asked for my colleagues home address 3 weeks earlier and then the following day she was given her redundancy letter, he said this may not be the case for me but it didnt look good, we would have to wait and see.

I was in a total mess for the rest of that day and hardly slept all night.

I wnet into work and decided I would email Hr ref my possible redundany and within an hour my manager called me in and gave me the letter I was dreading.

My question is.... should he have pre warned me in that way?? to worry me for 24 hours even though he says he didnt know anything about it ??
Isnt this gross misconduct of his position??

I have HR coming in on monday to discuss the letter with me should i air my views to them ??

No it isn't gross misconduct. Your manager could have kept his mouth shut and then you would have been complaining that he knew and didn't tell you! I know that potential redundancy is not at all nice - but he did this because he obviously respects you and thought that you might be better off with a "heads up". Mentioning this to you didn't change anything - it was just a warning made, no doubt, with the best of intentions. Managers may not know things, but they often can guess the lie of the land - that was all he was doing. What would be the purpose of complaining about him - it won't make you any the less redundant, and at the very best, the manager will get told not to warn people in future.
