Okay.. I'll try.. I did the "Diagnose the problem" thing and they proved unsuccessful, but I will give the whole thing a go when I get back.

Interesting points.. Just remember that I have been using this desktpop and router/cable combination for 1 year straight and NEVER had any problems with speed, dropping connections, etc. Just suddenly, since I had to manually power down the machine after a crash on Saturday night, I have not been able to get internet. Very sudden. Could it be a virus? Is this heard of?

At this point, with the OP convinced that the cable (and router) are both okay, and with no more configuration options left to tweak in Windows, I would download a Linux live CD, boot from that and test the hardware with a known good operating system.

    Hey,..

Strange news to report.. Today I turned my PC on and was presented with a Windows 7 "system restore" screen.. I clicked "OK" and let it run through the process for about 15 minutes.

It then asked me to restart, and I did.

    Now the internet works!

At least I can load webpages etc...

HOWEVER, I cannot seem to get my Torrent client to work.. It won't download anything.. Which is strange.. Any ideas, or a separate thread?

Which torrent client? Why won't it work? What is the error message reported? You might be better off asking on the support forums for the torrent client... Could be anything.. corrupted client binary, firewall problem, who knows..

With the sheer mention of torrent and with the problems youve had, id recommend a scan -

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)
