i pod touch (4) question

Good evening,
This question may have been asked before ( I did a search, but couldn't find the answer).
My sons I pod touch (4) has frozen. It is not recognised in I tunes on my laptop. There is a picture on the i pod screen of a USB cable and an arrow pointing to the i tunes logo.
We have tried pressing the "sleep" and power button simulaniously (as suggested in i tunes help)...nothing happens.
ETA....every now and again "windows need to install driver software for your apple moble device" then gives me 3 options...locate and install sortware....ask later....cancel.
When I try to locate the soft ware...it asks me to in set a disk.
My laptop has got awfully hot over the last 2 hours we have been trying to sort this out...is it connected.
Any ideas anyone?
