I've put NLA as that's who I'm with, but am considering changing to the RLA so will be interested in any responses here! The NLA are probably the biggest with the largest amount of clout, however their new website is overly cluttered and hard to navigate. You can no longer simply download a fact sheet, but instead have to go through several (fairly briefly written) pages as part of their accreditation course. Fine if you want course, but a pain if you just want to download a factsheet!

The RLA on the other hand possibly have a slightly amateur feel to them? (someone please correct me!) They've been pointed out recently on here and elsewhere as having publically given very poor advice - including on Breakfast TV! So I don't know. I await other views. If none, then perhaps a similar question on a more landlord specialist forum like landlordzone may get more response?
I'm not a lawyer, so this is just my opinion. Don't go acting on legal advice you get from a stranger on the internet!

Doesn't surprise me. They also advise in their guide to tenancy agreements that LLs who used to live in the rental property should grant non-shorthold assured tenancies.

    http://www.rla.org.uk/landlord/guides/tenancy_agreement/guide_to_tenancy_agreements.shtml

It's in the para headed 'owner occupier tenancy agreement'.

Much depends on your reasons for wanting to sign up to a LL association

As an alternative, you may wish to take a look at signing up to Landlordlaw and/or your local LL association.

Membership fees are tax deductible and you will be able to obtain discounted LL insurance cover.

Training courses for newbie LLs are often available via the local Council's private sector rentals team and those offered by the nat LL assocs are also open to non-members, at a slightly higher fee AFAIA

It was originally to get the tennancy agreement forms, although a friend has now soft copied over the agreement they use for me to use.

In addition it would be nice to get a discount on our insurance.

Finally it would be good to be able to just get any other advice as & when from people in a similar position to me.

I have read lots on the bits that are available to non members as I am the sort of person who likes to know as much as possible about things.
