Drinking in America

Hi guys

Don't know if it's been asked before, but what sort of booze do they sell in California

Now, I know this may seem like a silly question but I hate beer and am not keen on spirits and can't really drink wine - I tend to drink either Cider or WKD/Smirnoff Ice when out and I can't imagine that they would sell alcopops over there.

So it could be that I will be tea total for 3 weeks!

You drink WKD and Smirnoff Ice, but don't like spirits.....what do you think they are made from?

Funnily enough, Americans drink the same sh*t that we do over here.

Alcopops are taxed rather highly in California however, after it was realised that nearly 50% of all alcopops bought in California were drunk by children!

Not sure how old you are but the legal drinking age in most States is 21 and this is strictly enforced. If you look under 40, be prepared to show ID every time you enter a bar or buy a drink.

Ha ha Smirnoff Ice is just a large lemonade and not much vodka chilled to make it taste better and priced at a premium.

    Really.......didn't know that!

I didn't say that I didn't like spirits, just that I wasn't keen on them - they are not my preferred drink

But aside from that, thank you for that info

I was still ID'd in Vegas a couple of months ago on buying 2 cans of low strength lager, and am a lot older than 40.....lol

I would be pleased to have to show ID but alas, I don't think that will happen as I'm 41! I just have funny drinking habits

But thanks for the thoughts re the 21 age limit, I was aware of it, but some people won't be.
  • I'm can't remember Smirnoff Ice being sold in CA, but my OH says he definitely saw it in the shops and in the bars we went to.
I developed a real taste for frozen cocktail drinks after my last holiday there!
    Have a great time :-)

Not in supermarkets I suspect - only in liquor stores. Supermarkets only sell beer. Also, they used to make it with malt-derived alcohol and not vodka in the USA, as a tax dodge (and probably still do).

You may also find some strange flavours as well...grape....watermelon....apple....rasperry...pomegranite (how DO you spell that????)

Probably to hide the dodgy flavour from the malt liquor.

    Don't you believe it, I got ID'd in California and I am 49. :p

My wife drinks wine and cider. Cider is really hard to get hold of in the US. Oddly enough, Stongbow can be found in some supermarkets (e.g. Safeway) and some "English/Irish/British" theme pubs.

BTW if you ask for cider you will probably offered apple juice. You will need to ask for "hard cider" if you want the alcoholic stuff.
