How can I find out if property is a repossession?

Hi there, we are keen on a certain area, and there is very little for sale on RM or other websites, so we have been going street to street looking for for sale boards.
We saw a house that looked very run-down and when we spoke to a neighbour, they told us that they thought the house was a repossession. Is there any way we can find out more about it - such as if it actually is a repossession?
it could be a great home for us, although it would need a lot of work!
thanks for any help / advise (PS we are in Scotland if that makes a difference?)
