You don't need to pay for these! See link below.

I have used the hippo bag before and found that my flush performance was affected and the "big jobs" needed 2 flushes!!.

I currently use the save a flush device and it super, once filled its brick size and saves that amount of water every flush.

Using this I have no problems with flush performance.

You could fill a small plastic bag with water, tie a knot in it, and put that in the flush tank.

The amount of water you save will be dependant on the size and number of bags you use.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Good advice but I must add if you do this option you must ensure that you do not inhibit the action of the ballcock and arm.
The save a flush is shaped/sized to enable it to be used in most cisterns.

I also have one of the freebies from planemad's link and it works great.

A lot of older toilets don't flush properly if the cistern isn't full, you then have to flush again - not very water saving !

Go on your water company's website & see what free water saving devices they offer for toilets (& anything else!)

Thanks all. Ages ago, I applied for a free flush saver (not sure what kind it was) from Yorkshire Water (my local company) but it never turned up and contacting them didn't help. Anyway I found the one planemad recommended advertised fairly cheaply online so I'll just buy one of those rather than waiting to see if Yorkshire Water ups its game.

I like the look of the much more expensive (£20 ish) ones I linked to as they are siphon thingies that can vary the amount of water you get depending how much you need for each flush. But then I'd have to get my landlord's permission to get one fitted which they may not give - they are quite paranoid about any, even very minor, alterations in case they go wrong. And then, although I'd like to stay here for a while, as a tenant you never know when your landlord may want their flat empty again so it might not be worth it anyway. (I wouldn't feel confident fitting it myself so would have to pay someone to do that as well).

Q3 – What about putting a brick in the cistern? The BMA recommends against putting any object in the cistern to reduce the amount of water it stores because a toilet that was designed to flush on 13 litres will probably not clear the pan if you use a lower volume and then people just flush a second time, which uses even more water.
They make and sell toilets so they should know what they are talking about. What is it that water companies sell? Anything that is geven away has little value. Dont get conned by the water companies, asking advice from them on saving water is akin to asking a petrol company for advice on electric vehicles. Those silly bags they give away just give the PERCEPTION of saving water, when in fact they are more likely to waste it through double.
flushing. The only time they want you to save it is when they dont have enough to sell, hence short term water saving measures like hosepipe bans.
I have an interflush and it wastes no water at all and when the diaphragm breaks I will replace the siphon with a SAVER-SIPHON because it has a new type of diaphragm that should'nt break, ever. They are both on the interflush website, just google interflush.
