Samsung N145 Hard Drive Partition - Problem?

I set up my new N145 netbook a couple of days ago and just followed all the recommended prompts.

I’m a bit confused about this…..although I did think it seemed odd figures at the time?……but I just agreed to the system suggested partition and then it split my HD into C & D. From my limited knowledge I thought that it splits it so if you want to store the recovery software it’s then on D which is a separate area on the hard drive - is this correct?

As an example I have this on my old desktop which is 160gb total and split C Drive = 143GB & D Drive = 5.70GB.

So why did the N145 250GB HD automatically partition C Drive = 87.9GB & D Drive 130GB?!

Surely that’s way out? Or is it me that's wrong!!

Can someone please help or explain partitioning to me?

The restore partiton is usually hidden.

The recommended way to manage disk space is to have your operating system and programs on one partition (C) and your data storage (docs, photos, videos, music etc) on another.

Since quantity of data is likely (eventually) to be significantly larger than OS + programs that is why the recommended defaults when you partitioned ended up as you have.

If you want to change it use http://www.partition-tool.com/ Freeware and very easy.

The problem with Win Vista/7 is the default links in the Libraries for data point to disk space on C in the user profile. The easy way to fix this is to create folders on D for Docs, Music, Pictures, Video, Downloads etc. Then right-click on each of the Windows library icons and change the default folder for the library to the ones you've just created on D.

The restore partition will be hidden.

The reason you have a small C drive and a huge (in comparison) D drive is that when the laptop makers set up a laptop they use an basic image (the same as the recovery partition) over the whole range of laptops. So the Recovery / Initial setup will create a small C drive.

They have to cater for different HDD sizes. They make the C drive as small as the smallest drive in the range and give the rest over to the D drive.

That's why some machines which come with a 2Tb hard drive, the C drive is only a few tens of Gb, leaving 95% of the drive empty or a D drive.

    Thanks for your replies! :)

So my "new!" :o understanding of this.......is that from now on I should save any new programs I download ie ITunes on the C Drive but save any music, photos etc on the D Drive?

So would you think it is best to leave it as it is C Drive = 87.9GB & D Drive 130GB in that case?

Toxteth O'grady - Seems daft like you say that is how they are set up now but windows still automatically prompts you to save to C! Logic eh!

I'm not sure about the restore partition is that usually preloaded or something I need to create myself? I haven't actually added anything on to it yet but it's keep prompting me to do the Samsung restore program?

If you want to do a bit of tinkering with Windows...

You can change the location of your "My Documents" folder from the C:\ to the D:\ drive perminently.

So programs are saved to c: and all your personal files / data are saved on the D:\ drive.

    yes and yes

or you could just wait until your c drive is getting full before worrying about it, and buy a usb hard disk for backup
