Help.... I've lost proof of my NCD

My car insurance ran out in 2008 and I did not own a car for a couple of years afterwards. However, when I needed to get new car insurance I could not prove my NCD as the company I was insured with has ceased trading (and I did not have the paperwork anymore):(. I've actually got over 20 years of NCD but cannot prove it - so I'm back to square one! Is there a central place that I can contact to try to regain/confirm my NCD?

not sure, but given that someone can bring a claim against you for 5 years it might be be a good idea to keep documents for a while

I think the general rule is that NCD will remain valid for two years without being used on any policy. I know of people (man and wife) who will swap who is the policy holder every year just to keep their individual NCD intact. I'm afraid yours may now be lost unless you can find an understanding insurer...

If you can find proof of your no claims then your in luck but as its been so long since you last ins then it might not be much use anyway

As said, NCD is only valid for 2 years

Hi, as already stated ,most insurers only allow up to a two year lapse, I believe there are a couple that will consider up to 3 years, but once its over 3 years your back to zero I'm afraid.
  • Can you tell me which insurance companies will consider 3 years as I've found an old policy schedule which confirms my NCD but this ran out 23rd April 2009!!

When your old insurer closed for business, another insurer must have acquired its current and future liabilities. Otherwise, as vax2002 says, how would anyone mount a claim or continue to pursue a claim against one of its insured?

There will be a standard industry practice for the adoption of business from failed insurers. Besides, the underwriters of the policy won't have gone bust. One of the industry representatives on this forum should have the definitive answer, otherwise get in touch with the Association of British Insurers and explain the situation.. The parasites might as well do something for their money.

I think AVIVA and Coop ( CIS ). Otherwise try through an agent/broker.

No, privilege will only take it up to two years old.
