veterinary surgeries

our nearest one where our cat is registered, chosen because its within walking distance and my partner used the same vet for his previous cat so knows hes good, is only open two hours a day

one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening

which kind of limits, well alot, when you can actually take your cat to get things done

why arent surgeries open all day ?

I have often wondered that, even as a vet. We have reception open all day long and nurses available for advice although we do not have appointments ALL day. We need the odd gap to catch up, operate, look after in-patients, go to the toilet etc but we have consultation periods for 7 1/2 hours daily. It amazes me when vets only consult in the morning and evening, our lunchtime appointments are about our most popular

Mine is open from 8 - 6.30. You can pay £25 to see someone slightly outside of these hours, up to 6am-8am and 6.30pm to 8.30pm I think, if it's scheduled in advance. Then its emergency fees for anything unscheduled outside of these hours.

It always seems to be busy...I wonder how yours stays open with just two hours a day?!

aha, ok, sorry, im thinking my cat is more important than any other cat arent i ?

which is a good thing obviously because hes treated like a king, spoilt rotten :D

anyway, thinking about it, the hours they say is when you go and register your cat for that day ?

and then the first consultation and you come back later if they need an op or further treatment or owt ?

cool beans, dint think of it like that

he does run two separate branches, hes getting older, not sure how old but hes probably just working part time for the love of it, to keep active ?

im taking cat to get his vaccs next week, got a new carry case last weekend just for that purpose and a reminder postcard arrived today so off we go ;)

we went last june and hes a very timid cat with new people anyway, vet said he was an anxious cat

pulled him out of his carry case by the scruff of the neck, stuck the needle in, pulled it back out, pushed him back into carry case and off we went, cat dint even notice :D
  • Ours is open from 9 - 7.

There are appts from 9 - 10:30 in the morning and 4 - 7 in the afternoon (although will fit you in outside this if very urgent) - other times are for ops etc as Snowman mentioned.

An hour and a half doesn't seem that long to be consulting unless a very "un-busy" practice!

I always thought it was because for the rest of the day they may be operating and doing farm visits, this is certainly the reason in more rural areas. When I lived on a farm we could have a vet here all day if we were doing vaccinations etc. Many vets only have a small number of vets available to do all ops and appointments, visits etc.

The vets I use consult all day from 8.30 -7.30 at the main branch. They have large animal vets and equine vets who only deal with that side of things then they have the other vets who work to a rota with regards to consultations and ops. The 2 smaller branches only carry out limited consultations and minor ops.
