We booked 1 week, £455, got there saturday, monday building works on apartments immediately opposite 8am-6pm. and the owners knew about it as it had been going on some weeks.

owners kept our money after promising us a refund when we said we could no longer stand the noise and had to leave early, tuesday. when we got back to the uk we received £70 refund=15%.

we asked them for 50% refund, they said no but we will offer 50% off a further booking in the future but seeing as this would cost in excess of £500, travel, ferry, petrol, plus £225 for the apartment again its cheaper to take the loss.

all apartment blocks are close together and all are to be renovated.

because they live there we think they are under the french rules & regulations so if you are fluent french there could be some compensation.

they promised a quiet relaxing apartment in a prestigious area but the permanent residents are poor....so probably local authority housing.

    As requested :

Search Tripadvisor Vacation Rentals for La Rochelle
  • UPDATE: we have written off our mistake but Trading Standards haven’t and are interested in this company to whom we have supplied all the information requested, luckily we downloaded all the info when we booked.

TripAdvisor to be investigated by ASA over claims of 'fake reviews'
The reviews posted for Apartment for 2 in Parcs Location, La Rochelle which is also called parc du frank delmas
prior to mine were said to be from holidaymakers in 2007-2009 and only one from 2010.
But these dates of when they stayed there have now disappeared, why????

    Quote from the daily mail
TripAdvisor to be investigated by ASA over claims of 'fake reviews' posted on site
As many as five million of the most current reviews on the website could be fake, according to Chris Emmins, co-founder of online reputation management company KwikChex.com.

Travel experts have long complained that hotel owners can manipulate their ranking on the website by posting fake glowing reviews or offering incentives for guests to write good comments.
Caroline Blake, consultant editor of the Good Hotel Guide, claimed on her blog that she had tested TripAdvisor by posting fake reviews, which appeared on the site immediately.

She said: 'It is despicable that people who haven't even stayed at hotels can wax lyrical about them to improve bookings.'
It also claims that the website refuses to remove fraudulent reviews, even when it has been proven they claim false accusations.

Stay here if you believe the “good“ reviews and their website, just remember I have nothing to gain from this, we have already written this off as a mistake never to be repeated. Cheaper to have an all inclusive week in the sun as we did to recover from this nightmare.
I will not be around for a little while but will respond asap and of course let you know the results of the investigation in due course.

just to let you know that although trading standards have requested a refund on my behalf the vendor refused but still offered a 50% reduction on a further booking but that would cost me £500 minimum travel costs to take up an offer that would cost me for the apartment £225, we had only asked for a further refund of £155! to bring it to half of what we had paid for the week.

we are still undergoing treatment for cancer and have been for 3 years so could not if we wanted to spend a further £725 take up their offer.

Trading standards europe do not have any enforcement powers and have directed me to the small claims court EU should I wish to go down that route.

I just wonder how many others could experience what we have and owners of private holiday lets know we have very little by way of recovering our hard earned money when they fail to provide what is promised.

Once bitten......we will never book with a private individual abroad again.
