    I've been Money Tipped!
The wonderful news for likers of cucumber is that they are very cheap and bogof atm. DH and I had a cider marinated cucumber salad last night, and just had a mixed salad with cucumber for lunch and will be having a sad with cucumber tomorrow.

we'll panic if one of us pops our clogs, but until then, salad as usual.

    Hi guys.
In need of some more advice about cucumbers this time
I have 4 in a square tub that look to be doing well at the moment.3 of them are flowering and I was wondering about the hight that they will grow to (the plants) and what support they will need as they are leaning on a cane just now.And should they be seperated or can I leave them in the same tub.The tub is the square poundland kind,it was all I had left to use for them. However will sport out and buy other containers if needed.I was thinking it would be cramped as they get taller.

    Thanks in advance.

I mean the store purchased green cucumbers.

im sure store bought ones will be fine, the shops wouldnt sell stock that would make you ill, the supermarkets would end up with a hugh amount of unhappy customers
  • if you are a bloke you can eat cucumbers till your belly full....if you are a woman beware!!
im so sad i was thinking i hope mine grow soon....then realised id planted courgettes:(:rotfl:

Its starting to point to a festival in Germany and food bought and consumed from there, they are reportedly testing water supplies to the festival, the cucumba story is starting to look a bit thin.

Thanks for all the various replies. Due to the differing viewpoints, if cucumbers do contain ecoli, would the techniques of either peeling, boiling, frying, pickling or freezing (e.g as soup) destroy it?

It can survive for extended periods in water and soil, under frozen and refrigerated temperatures, and in dry conditions. It also can adapt to acidic conditions. The organism is destroyed by thorough cooking or pasteurization.

  • I shall be eating lots of cucumber as usual. More than usual if it's going to become cheaper. And avoiding salad dished out from takeaways where it is left uncovered and open to flies, etc - much as usual, as I think a lot of the transmission is from the person handling the food items and not further along the supply chain.

I seem to remember that in the states, people seem to wash salad in disinfectants or bleaches (bit like Milton, I think) bought at a fair cost. I wondered then what was so bad about salad that they needed to do that.

Then again, I am tough as old boots - I was at the Surrey farm right in the middle of the E.coli outbreak there and was entirely unscathed, as were the kids and OH.

I'm probably not the sort of person anyone should take advice from :)
