Cat repellant for my naughty cat

Hi all,

We have a neurotic cat which we got from a rescue centre about 4 years ago, she has suddenly decided that peeing in the dining room at night is a right good laugh. Fortunately we live in Spain where the floors are tiled so her servants can mop up in the morning.
She and her friend have been litter box trained and she uses the box every day and most nights but just recently the peeing is getting more regular. The other cat is no problem and this cat is the boss.
To break the habit we have resorted to putting the litter tray in the dining room overnight and she normally uses it but there have been a couple of 'wet floor nights' :(
I am sure this is a behavioural problem and my questions are:
What should I be mopping with to be sure no smell remains?
Is there any natural thing I can use to deter the little madam?

Thanks for any help
Regards Lizzielogs

    Hi

Cats usually start doing this when they are stressed out by a change in the household or of course marking territory in response to a new cat. They can also do this if they have FLUTD (Feline lower urinary tract disease) / FUS (feline urinary syndrome).

Where is the litter tray normally overnight / where are the cats kept overnight? Is there a chance that another cat is coming in at night and invading their territory. Has anything changed in her feline friend's behaviour to suggest she is trying to become the boss cat? Have you changed anything in the house recently or had a large number of visitors / strangers?

To clean the area you mustn't use disinfectant. If you were in the UK I'd suggest visiting Pets At Home / Jollyes to buy something called Simple Solution. You simply spray this on the area and it completely breaks down the enzymes in the urine and removes any odour.

If you can't buy this in Spain then you can replicate the effect by first of all spraying with a diluted solution of biological washing powder / liquid. Spray and leave for 20-30 minutes and then wipe up and spray the area with surgical spirit. Just leave the surgical spirit to evaporate and this completely eliminates the enzymes that can make the area smell. Using any form of disinfectant just amplifies the smell (to a cat) and makes them more likely to use it :-)

    Hope this helps

There is no change in the household and she will use the litter tray at night if we bring it in and always uses it when it is outside during the day.

The tray is kept in the garage all the time (which is next to the dining room and about 5 meters from the cat!) There is no chance of another cat coming in as we have a magnetic cat flap on the garage door so only our two can use it. Rosie is a bully and there is not much chance of Amy becoming boss! No influx of visitors and whjen we do have them she is megga friendly and sociable.

Right, that's possibly where I have been going wrong as I'm using perfumed bleach/ disinfectant. Will get the biological powder and the surgical spirit (if I can find the Spanish name for it!) today. We have friends coming over all the time from the UK so I can always get access to UK products.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply Debbie, have you ever had any luck with the Rosemary cuttings/ mothballs/ garlic advice I have seen elsewhere?

Alcohol is the Spanish equivalent of surgical spirit (the pure kind, not drinking kind :D)

You can get it in supermarkets, droguerias or pharmacies :)
