Buying tax free from Jersey

Hiya all!
Does anyone know if I can buy (over the internet) £40 pounds worth of goods from Jersey without having to pay duty. My memory which is not good, says anything under £16 is tax free and anything above that will incur VAT on delivery.
Can anyone confirm this?
Anyone have any experience of this sort of thing?
Cheers!

You are liable for VAT if the "value" is £18 or over. Value can include shipping and insurance costs. There is no customs duty on goods from Jersey. Note VAT and duty are two separate charges (they are not the same thing!). There is also excise duty which could be levied.
You might find that the Jersey supplier charges you UK VAT anyway because the item is over £18 and destined for the UK. In this case, you will not have to pay any import VAT or post office fees when the item arrives in the UK.

4.3 What are the "Special Territories"?
These are countries that are part of the EU for customs purposes, but not for fiscal purposes. Goods imported from these countries therefore are free of customs duty, but subject to excise duty and import VAT. The "special territories" are:
* The Ǻland Islands (Finland)
* The Canary Islands (Spain)
* The Channel Islands
* The French Overseas Departments of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique and Reunion
* Mount Athos also known as Agion Poros (Greece)0
