Front wall/fence - suggestions of alternatives to brick or picket fence wanted

Hi everyone,
we've just moved into a Victorian townhouse with a lower ground floor/semi basement. It has a very small front garden and currently has a picket fence. This lets in loads of light into the kitchen but means passers-by can look straight down into our kitchen. I realise that if I replaced the picket fence with a solid wood or brick it would prevent light coming in.
Does anyone know of any alternative materials that provide more privacy than we currently have whilst allowing some light through.

Blinds on the windows, vertical or venetian so you can angle them.
