Car Insurance when on a Provisional License

Hi :j
Does anyone know of the cheapest car insurance My son is 17yrs and holds a provisional license. Even though he is having lessons just trying to get through his test I want to take him out in my car so he can gain more experience on the road. His instructor says he is a good driver and he is confident he would be ok.
Looking for the best insurance and the cheapest. Insuring him on his own would cost £4000 but on my the best quote is £1600. He has got a years non claims as he rides a moped.
Any advice greatly appreciated.:j

Hi - have you tried https://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk as they recognize moped / motor cycle NCD according to their website.
Quinn-Direct are also cheap for new drivers but I don't know if they will accept motor cycle NCD.0 -
Looking at the cost I think it would be cheaper to give him more time with the instructor. Then once he has passed his test to put him on your insurance until such time as he has his own car and needs his own insurance. I have been in your position and researched it extensively. My son is now 24 and driving his own car on his own insurance but he was on mine for a while. Let me outline his history and it might give you a few pointers. When he passed his test at 17 we bought a new Fiesta purely because it gave two years free insurance and that was worth about £3000 or more. I do not think they have that offer on any more but quite a few car firms were doing it. When he went to university we sold the car and I used to put him on my insurance for the holidays (you cannot do more than 30 days at a time). When he finished at university we put him down as a named driver on my car and he drove on that for about 2 years.
There are special rules about putting a younger person on your policy and these are not well known (I even put a thread on here to ask about it). You have to be the main user and pay all the running costs it is illegal if you just pretend that it is your car when it is really theirs and you have insured it with the intention of lowing the premium. If you have a claim and are investigated they may not pay if it turns out that you have another car which is also yours. I did not although I am on my husband’s policy as well and had to say that I has access to another car.
When he gets to 21 his insurance will be a bit lower and if he has a small engine that will be better still but the premiums will be high because of not having a no claims bonus. My son’s insurance for a 1.8 Focus was £1340 with Marks & Spencer he is 24 but did not have any No Claims Bonus discount. There were cheaper policies but by the time you added it courtesy car and legal protection they all came out at around a similar figure. The cheapest to start off with was Bell but I have a feeling they charge you admin fees on top.0
