Metal mesh thing on windows (for security) - whats it called?

My house got burgled recently. Someone smashed the glass on the back door to gain access.

I have looked into retractable security grilles but I am put off by the expense and more importantly, the fact that they have to be locked via a key (fire hazard).

I think the easiest thing would be for me to install the wire/metal mesh thing over the glass like I have seen on some properties. Problem is that I can't find it anywhere and I don't even know what it's called. Can anyone help?

Any advice regarding installation or pros/cons would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Have you got an Alarm ?
solar powered ones are the dogs bits, no wires, just fasten up, put the sensors and switches up and away you go.
It is better to look at making them move and pick somewhere else rather than make it harder for them once they start.
If they see the house is "belled" they tend to find one that is not.
Then look at security mesh .

Thanks Vax 2002 - but would the solar alarm require a monthly fee? I'm looking to avoid this.

MX5huggy - I'm lnot being allowed to post links (since I am a new user apparantly), but it's more like expanded metal, though I can't find any UK sites that sell it for home use.

How did smashing the glass on the back door gain them access? Did it have no deadlock or locking bolts?

Dont bother you'd need to do your all downstairs windows as well. If someone want to get into your house the sad fact is that they will. orms suggestion is only the sure fire way. Instead look at an alarm that notifies you, security lighting, discouragement from entering the back of the property ie trellis on top of all the fences and last but no least perhaps Ip based security cams that email you pick when trigered.
