Unsolicited calls

I keep getting calls from some company claiming to wipe out your debt.
It tells me to press 2, to speak to an advisor.
I want to speak with them and tell them to take me off their list (no idea if they would or not), but I have two questions.
Would that just confirm to them that the number has someone on the other end?
By pressing 2 would I in some way be connecting to them and getting charged?
Any help appreciated.

Possibly - but they'll keep trying anyway so what's to lose?
No, you will not be charged for the call (they've called you).
Is there a CLI? If so, please enter the details on https://www.whocallsme.comTime has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

OK, thanks. I just wondered if they might be exploiting some aspect of the phone system that I wasn't aware of.Is there a CLI? If so, please enter the details on whocallsme
Unfortunately I don't have Caller ID on my line.0 -
1471 speaks the last caller's number on most landlines.Unfortunately I don't have Caller ID on my line.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. The problem is that if your number is on their "list" then it is on lots of other lists too.
Tip: when registering on a website, be very careful about giving your phone number. I usually make up a number ! My apologies to 01234 567890 :rotfl::rotfl:
I have found the best defence to be a phone with a display and an answer machine.
When the phone rings I look at the display, if it is someone I know, I answer it. If I don't recognise then number, or it is one of the "usual suspects", I let it go into the answer machine. 99% of the time there is no message - if a human starts to leave a message, I can decide whether to pick up that call or ignore it still.0 -

Thanks. Yes, I do typically give fake details, including phone number, and I also have an 07077 number set up that I give to people, when I want them to be able to contact me, but only at my convenience.
This is actually the only spam call that I get at the moment, but it is a pain that they are calling everyday.
I do also tend to call screen too, but I am just getting a bit tired of these guys calling everyday.0 -
I do similar - make a one-digit 'mistake' on my real number (having made sure the number gives the unobtainable tone).moonrakerz wrote: »Tip: when registering on a website, be very careful about giving your phone number.
