The best stupid time limit on retail park I've seen is a 2 hour limit, and on this retail park is a cinema.

Just how many films are longer than 2 hours including adverts & trailers these days?

A Waitrose in Sussex gives out pieces of paper as you enter, with the time hand-written on them. The piece of paper says '£50 fine if you overstay', not really the sort of unlawful threat you would expect Waitrose to be handing as a welcome to each customer driving in!

Not the one in Chichester by chance?

Nope but they must use the same time of arrival tickets in various Waitrose stores!
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

  • I recently fell foul of this rule. I was shopping in my local Supermarket and after a long shop that included trying on and purchasing several items of clothing i exceeded the 2 hour limit,; by 6 minutes! I returned to the car to find a £60 fine. i went back into the store and showed the manager my £127 shopping receipt and asked if they could do anything about the fine. I was told It was not within their power. I have since written 3 times to the customer service department, detailing the situation, each time they just sent a simple statement saying the parking is managed by an outside company and they have no control; and to top it off saying they look forward to seeing me in store soon.

i have checked with the local council, and they do own the car park and the 2 hour limit is to ensure that non supermarket shoppers can use the car park to use local shops without charge as the supermarket was built on the site of a carpark.

Seems the store would rather reap the cost from the parking fines than keep loyal customers.
I made them refund the whole cost of my shop, but non the less i wasted 2 hours and 6 minutes.

You mean the Council own the car park but leased it back to the Supermarket, with planning permission to allow 2 hours free parking for anyone?

And the so-called 'PCN' you got was from a private comapny and was headed up 'Parking Charge Notice' (not a real Penalty Charge Notice')?

You did ignore the fake PCN, yes, please say you didn't pay it? The fake PCN was a scam, I so hope you didn't think you actually had to pay it just because the store said 'tough' and the Council mentioned they owned the car park (so what)?

Such stupidity will drive away custom. I rarely 'go shopping' now, much preferring the convenience and cost savings of the internet.

I used to be a regular visitor to the excellent St.Peter's Retail Park in Wolverhampton. Since OBS abused their position and were still retained as the PPC, I won't touch that place with a bargepole.

At best,in future, I may make a flying visit to look at a particular product but will escape as quickly as possible and source it from the web.

Merry Hill is the same. Nightmare traffic, then some knobhead placing a ticket because you infringe the most minor of rules. No thanks. :)
