Boxing in the pipes is also possible and would be the easiest/cost effective way out however you are still left with something to "look at", really depends on how you look at it.
Surely any half-competent joiner/builder could box in the whole of that flat section of wall? Extend the line of the angled wall/window wall to the left, meeting up with a flat panel over the pipes, about 2-3 inches off the existing wall, and taking up the whole of that section?
Only complication would be finding ready-made skirting and coving to match, but again - a half-competent joiner and/or plasterer should be able to get a good match....0 -
Thank you so much for all your replies. I'm trying to weigh out boxing them in versus putting them in the wall on an aesthetic basis. The main reason for this being that almost half the rooms in the house have these pipes on show and I'm wondering whether boxing them in will just make me have the same problem, this time too much mdf on show?0

If you do it with plasterboard, a skim coat of plaster over it, and the skirtings and covings, it should be indistinguishable from the current0 -

If your meaning filling in the whole space from breast/window then certainly possible but the room maybe loosing valuble space. If you mean stud out from the pipes and carry thru the window angle over it certainly thats fine to, all down to what cost/looks that the owner prefers. Personally on 2nd option i would be more inclined to notice the possible difference between the two sides of the window, once curtains/blinds/whatever is added it may show up to be more noticeable. One other benefit of having them relocated and dropped down the side of the breast is if access is ever needed to them, being on the side of the breast means any damage that has to be made good opening up the stud will be a lot less noticeable, it also gives the option of maybe dropping some cables down there for tv/electric point which are also out of sight:)Norn Iron Club member No 3530 -

I'm guessing they're pipes from the boiler to the radiators? Fairly common really, I have a lot of these and they're much less obvious if you paint them the same colour as the walls or one that is similar to the paper, plus furniture and house plants tend to fill up the corners of rooms anyway. Some of mine have been run next to the window frames so that they're hidden entirely by the floor to ceiling curtains, so that might be a simpler way to largely make them less visible?0
