Cancellation fee from Santander ???

I recently received my Buildings/Contents renewal quote from Santander, which had almost doubled on last years fee. I rang them up and spoke to an operator who reduced the renewal fee by a couple of quid and I agreed to renew the policy.
The new policy arrived and I decided on the same day not to renew and rang Santander and informed them.
I received a confirmation letter from them. Today, on checking my Bank account, I saw that Santander have withdrawn £20.00 from my bank under the old direct debit for a cancellation fee for the Insurance. Has anyone else suffered this, can they legally do it. Does the distance selling regs apply to online insurance? Any help gratefully accepted

Often cooling off periods don't apply to renewals (this is experience from mobile phone contracts, not specific to Santander Insurance as I'm not certain about the product's terms offhand). I'd count myself lucky the cancellation wasn't the full year's price (it would be on a mobile phone).

It will all bein the terms and conditions, £20 is pretty reasonable, often there is a cancellation fee and an administration fee.

I received a confirmation letter from them. standard practice - though at this point they could have reminded you about the cancellation fee - mind you they could have donw that at the pouint you notified them that you had changed your mind.

£20 isn't too bad - these cancellation fees are standard practice.
UNLESS there is NOTHING in any paperwork that tells you that, if you cancel you would have to pay a cancellation fee...:osorry!
