I have quite fine hair and I feel as if they don't even 'meet' when you clamp them over your hair if you see what I mean?
It states on the box (front) that they have "floating plates" - as above, they are spring loaded.
Also on the back it states, "Floating plates technology to reduce excess pressure on the hair".
I understand what you mean by the gap and that they don't "meet", but they do meet once slight pressure has been applied.
Please report back after playing around with them - maybe you do have a "dodgy" pair, but mine is fine.
 Good luck.
UPDATE: Just tried mine (for research, lol) and they do heat up very fast - not as robust as my GHD's, but at less than a 10th of the cost will do as a spare and to take on holidays (intended purchase). Not too bothered if they get left in the bathroom or even damaged at the price.
