Contents insurance is auto-renewing - any get out?

Hi there
First of all, this is my fault. I am a muppet and was busy over the last few days so didn't get to the comparison sites in time - but holding out a last shred of hope someone here might be able to help.
My contents insurance (we rent, so that's all we have) is due to expire in two days. After having been useless and 'meaning to get round to it', I now check the letter and see that unless I contact them at least 5 days before this, they will renew automatically and there's nothing I can do
Now, the quote they've sent is a fair bit more than last year's price, and I'm not exactly impressed. We're on a tight budget as it is, without throwing more cash down the drain each month :S
Am I totally knackered here or is there any last minute get out clause? x

I paid my son's home insurance for a year (full one off payment on my credit card) when he first got his house as a one off to help him.
A year later I noticed a £300 ish payment on my credit card and finally realised it was a renewal for the house insurance, even though I didn't give permission for them to take the money from my card.
My son rang the company and they refunded the full amount within about 5 days by cheque made out to him.
There was no problem and it went quite smoothly thankfully. This was with Barclays insurance.
If I were you I'd ring them up and say you didn't realise it automatically renewed.
Good luck!0 -
is there any last minute get out clause?
Have you rang them up and tried to lapse it? as it hasn't started yet (get a name, date and time in case you need to refer to recordings in future).
I'm not sure if there is any legal basis for their 5 days, so I'd get on the phone.
If they say it must be 5 days, ask them which law/regulation applies as the policy hasn't been started yet.
DO NOT assume they are right about the notice period.
Get on the phone and try to lapse it.0 -

As to PPs have said phone them up and tell them you do not want it.
1.) They may well reduce the premium to something like reasonable or
2.) Tell them you do not authorise payment. If it is on Debit card Credit Card get onto the issuers and tell them payment has been made without your authority and ask them to claim it back.
3.) If you do cancel it make sure you replace it (if you want to)"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

RESULT! Just got off the phone to my insurers after running some comparison sites, and got it down (with them) to under half what they'd quoted for the year!

Thanks for the encouragement that it was still worth persuing! xOn the up
