Problems backing up

Hi. Have recently bought a new Acer desktop pc. I have managed to put to disc the recovery discs that Acer recommended when i turned pc on, but i am having trouble using windows backup to do a full backup. It all starts fine but then freezes at around 45%. I have left it running overnight and its still at 45% the next morning. Any ideas?
