Always been a named driver (now divorced with no NCB)

Hello I have always been a named driver on my ex husbands insurance or recently a company car. Unfortunately I can't get proof for the 8 years on a company car as our company was bought out just before I took redundancy and won't issue a letter for more than the 6 months I worked for the new company. I've had 2 accidents in 22 years of driving, both of which weren't my fault and the other side took full responsiblilty. When I've been comparing prices I am being quoted between 1500 and 3700 for a small Daewoo!!
Does anyone remember a commercial on the tv last year that catered for women who had always been a named driver.
I am sooo frustrated with the quotes coming in, there is no way I can afford insurance that's more than my car's worth!

    Hi

Which was the most recent - the company car or the husbands insurance?

If the most recent was the husbands car, contact the insurers and ask them if they will be willing to honour your NCB history as a named driver if you take a policy with them.
  • The most recent was the company car. And things aren't too amicable with the ex husband to find out which insurance company it was.

    How recent were they.
My insurer only wants to know about accidents in the past 3 years. For some it's 5 years, but if these were some time ago then they may not count againt you if they have "expired".
If they are between 3 and 5 then you'd be better off finding a company that only looks at 3 years history.
  • Thanks, one last year and one 5 years ago. It's still a shame that another party hitting you can affect your insurance.

I would try a local broker.
However with no evidence of your named driver experience or company car driving experience then it's going to be difficult to get those taken into account.

We only have one car in our household but my husband and I rotate the policyholder so that we both can keep our no claim bonus going.
It doesn't expire for two years with most companies, so you can keep 2 NCDs alive this way.
That might not have been any use in your case, but just thought I'd mention it in case you find yourself in that position in future.
Of course you still need to answer any questions honestly about who is the main driver etc.

I am on my second period of not having a car (although there is a car in the household) and I have found that I can save a lot of money by foregoing a car (and MOTs, repairs, servicing, tax etc.) although it does depend on where you've chosen to live in respect of the availability of public transport options.

It appears to be unpopular to mention it, but perhaps it's a good time to review your options if a professional broker can't help you?
