They are worktop fitters, not whole kitchen fitters and if I don't know which one is the stopcock it won't make it any easier for them. Anyway I got some WD40 and a pair of pliers and managed to turn the thing off and stop the hot water from the tank aswell. Not only am I prepared for the new worktops if I ever have a leak I now know how to switch off the water which is always useful.

They are different from each other that's why they have different names.

If I have to deal with this kind of thing I always find where the next valve is so that I can work on the faulty one without any risk of getting wet.

Canucklehead thanks for that, I know that's what they are, but the OP may not know what they are looking for, also in an older house you never know what others have done to the pipes :eek::D
Trying to help the OP 'think out side the box', so that if they see something, they might say, Ohh, that might be a washing machine 'tap', but the bigger thing next to it might be a stopcock. IYKWIM
