Used Car repair question

Hi,I have just bought a used X reg BMW when i drove it home i noticed steam coming out the radiator, took it back they said it needed a new radiator,i thought this repair was going to be free but i i have been told i have to pay half the amount it cost £75 he says i will have to pay this because of him bringing down the asking price when i bought it,should i really be paying anything at all.Regards Martin.

If you bought from a trader, no, you shouldn't have to pay anything, as the fault occurred immediately after purchase whilst you were driving it home you could have rejected it for a full refund, which is what I would have done because it could indicate headgasket failure and I wouldn't want all the hassle of that.

Does that not depend on whether it was bought from a dealer or private sale ? OP - which was it ?

Rubbish, this occurred whilst he was driving the car home so the fault was obviously pre existing, they have fixed it now and he should not pay anything towards it.
(As long as this was a trade sale as noted above)
  • Hi,Yes it is a Dealer, looks as if i shouldnt have had anything to pay. Thanks for the Info.Regards Martin.

if its private sale there is NO comeback if it pre-exists or not - if it happens ont he drive home or not - makes no difference.

As the OP wasn't providing detail private was assumed in the response.

Well not many private sellers would take the car back, diagnose the fault, fix it, then ask for half the repair cost. That was the clue that he was talking about a trade sale rather than a private one!

if you carefully read the original post it does not state the repair has been performed yet - hence they are asking, according to the OP for half the cost BEFORE the repair (as its worded).

So there's no clue there, unless you misread the OP's original post.
