New house - arranging gas/electricity providers

Hi folks,

I'm moving into a my first house in a week and a half (:j). Obviously one of the things I need to sort out is the gas and electricity supplier.

I know who the current provider is for both, and I also know who I want to go with. What is the procedure for changing suppliers?

Am I right in saying that I have to wait til I get in, take a meter reading, phone the current supplier notifying them that I've moved in and these are the readings. Then I can contact the new supplier (direct or via uSwitch for example) to say I want to change. Then I wait the 6 weeks or whatever it is for them to switch, during which time I pay the old tariff rates the vendor is currently on?

Thanks for any help.

No, you don't have to pay the 'old rates'. When you register for the account you can select whatever tariff you want. But if you're switching straight away then you'll need to select a tariff without any ETC's. If you don't specify, you will be placed on the default tariff-Standard (which is usually the most expensive).
