VAT-free food for pets?

My Google skills are weak today. Is it legal to feed your pet (as opposed to working) dog one of the many VAT-free foods?

Does that position change when companies like Arden Grange offer exactly the same product, one in a glossy bag with VAT applied and another in a brown breeder bag without VAT? Assuming that you're not a breeder.

Just curious as to the letter of the law on this. I've bought a bag of Skinners Duck (I know to be gradual about the change :) ) for our younger one as poop-wise she's never really settled into AG like the older one did.

I don't know the legalities of it, but how can they police it if it is illegal? Do working dogs have special papers?

I bought a bag of Wagg working dog food in sainsburys, which is VAT free. I don't own a working dog, and I wasn't asked to proove I did.
Please excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!

You discover something new everyday on this site! Can we get this for cats - mine gets rid of the mice and I'd be happy to give him 20p a month in wages.....(although would I get done under minimum wage regulations?).

Now working goldfish, that one could be harder to justify.....

Morrisons are selling Wagg complete dry dog food for working dogs 17g for just under £9. See http://www.waggfoods.co.uk/products.aspx?ProductID=4

May be getting 2 boarder collie crosses from a rescue centre. Would this food but right for them??? as although they are boader collies they would actually not be working.
  • Mine's fed Skinners Duck & Rice - bought at the pet shop where any member of the public can buy things.

    LKMC Border Collie crosses?
Personally, I'd go for Skinners over Wagg - it's a much better quality food (generally, if you can buy in a supermarket it's not the best quality).

Have a look at their site http://www.skinnerspetfoods.co.uk/products/field---trial-products/field---trial-products/ - link is to the vat free ones. Again, I'd go for the Duck or Salmon or Turkey & rice as they don't contain cereals or any "carp" (much better for your dog).
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!

I wouldn't have thought it was illegal for you to buy this food and feed it to your pet but I suspect that HMRC will one day be interested in the companies selling VAT free pet food as this is a VAT avoidance scam. It will be Skinners / Arden Grange etc who will be in trouble, not the end user.

Although Skinners costs a bit more to buy than Wagg it is loads better quality and as it's not full of fillers you don't need to feed anywhere near as much ie. for a 20kg dog Wagg 400g a day Skinners 260g a day.
