Chimney Leaking

Hello, just got off the phone to a relative who was due to have a new gas fire installed today. When the people came to install it they said it could not be done as there is a leak and the smoke is coming out of two chimney pots instead of just one.
The house is over 100 years and originally was one whole house but has been split into two some many years ago. By the looks of it, in this house as it is now there was a fire in the two bedrooms on the first floor and directly below each one is the living room and dining room which both has (well had until one was blocked up) fires in them. The chimney breasts are both separate and meet up into one near the top of the house. He didn't go into much detail about what was needed but said as it is they cannot carry on with the job.
Any one any ideas? She is going to call round a few places and get some information.
Thanks.

Get the chimney lined with a flexible stainless steel liner.0

As above, get a chimney liner to install a gas liner.0

Looking at the cost of those things installed it looks like they are going to have to change to an electric fire!

Thanks,
No, the gas liner is the cheapest type. The Class 1 liners for solid fuel are the expensive ones.0
