I am after an external hardrive, which you plug in via USB,
which backs up automatically every so often (the frequency which you can set)
and when you have Added some new stuff to a Word file, on your primary internal hardrive, then the External hardrive saves/overwrites its External HD version of this file, and also Overwrites its older version with its Newer Version.
so the External hd version of files should be RESAVED/replaced by the NEWER versions which are saved on the primary Internal hardrive. (where windows is)
so Both Hardrives, internal + External save their files, to the NEWER Modified file.

It's just a drive, they can all do that with the right software
xcopy, robocopy, various sync tools (eg synctoy) can do it, and be set to run automatically as a scheduled job.
The method can be dangerous, you make a mistake, or delete the file, or directory, it gets replicated before you notice, you've lost both copies. A worm infection can wipe out both sets of data in seconds.!!

I have a Seagate hard drive which as software for backing up built in. You can choose it to back up e.g. every tuesday at 8.45AM or set it to every 20 minuites.
Im sure you can use any hard drive though with the right software.0
