trouble with 1 & 1, godaddy, 123-reg and several others, they are basically domain registrars and not web hosts, so their support are usually geared up to offer support for domain related queries only.
Godaddy's support is extremely geared up to web hosting, I really couldn't recommend a better host based on quality of service and support. I made some very school boy errors when setting up a site for the first time using there hosting (about 4 months ago). There support was on the phone for half an hour going through it step by step until the problem was resolved, a problem that was my fault not theirs i'll add. Its a standard 0208 number aswell not an 0845 like one and one, they speak english, unlike oneandone which is barely english.
As already mentioned though price should only be part of the factor, no point in paying for the most expensive/cheapest if the site is going to be offline all the time.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

where i say "usually" this is because they are domain registrars rather than web hosts, reason 1 & 1 barely speak english is because its a German company. i agree with you that price is not the only factor to consider when looking for a webhost, do research first, especially uptime, no good spending money on a host that has your sites down more times than up. Also is the host a reseller or do they have their own servers. in my 10yrs+ i have had clients that have come to me in despair after they got hosting through ebay for 99p a month and suddenly the host has vanished. even on ebay now you can see master reseller hosting for £1.99 a year with unlimited space and bandwidth. this means for £2 a yr you can resell shared hosting and reseller hosting and use up all the server resources. but in the real world a host offering this will not last long as you cant offer any such service, so anyone taking up his offer will be left high and dry without any site backups.0 -
Most of the techie talk is way above me, but can I just say that this advice is extremely good for web hosting and indeed all aspects of your business!I would suggest you don't just look at price when choosing a host, but also consider the quality of the hosting, support, space, speed, etc. For instance, if you try to stream video off most shared hosting packages you will be disappointed, yet if you talk to a proper hosting company, they will make sure you get the hosting that best suits your needs.
cheapest is not necessarily best, what you are almost always after is best Value for Money!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

You can go to Hostsphere.co.uk who offer a multisite platform where you can have upto 5 sites hosted. Cost is £99.99Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0

Actually Sue I think you are right- I need to change the thread title!
I really need a package - ideally to host 2 or 3 websites. One that is reliable andt hat is a reasonable price
if you want to host more than 1 site then i suggest either a reseller account, master reseller account or a VPS.
a good place to look is
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=45
where you will find reviews etc. Also with such account you can always resell hosting to give you a little income and may even cover the cost of your hosting0 -

Don't jump the gun, I wasn't disagreeing with you, just making the point (as you said) that not all are the same!!!
One and one maybe a german company their support call centre is in india, poor english and a terrible connection doesn't make it a pleasant experience when dealing with them. Godaddy was an american operator and the line was crystal clear which makes a huge difference.
Don't use a middle man, good point go direct is always best atleast then when service isn't as it should be your dealing with the people who can do something about it rather than a reseller.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

yes 1 & 1 has started using a support centre in india to outsource their support. i did the same thing a couple of years ago, but i ended up getting some bad feedback from my clients, so i decided to stop this.
Go Daddy are American, but they have a European support centre. hosting offered by these domain registrars are usually just basic hosting with limited resources and will not allow for dedicated IPs or ssl certs unless you upgrade to a overly charged plan, which is usually through a sponsor the same as their basic plans, so they resell hosting for someone else.0 -
And just to add to the list of options, you can use Amazon AWS S3 and/or Cloudfront for PAYG hosting of sites if all the fancy stuff is client-side, or EC2 if you need server-side processing. It is a very cost-effective way of having the benefit of Amazon's infrastructure, all backed up and replicated, massively scaleable, from just a few cents a month. But it will take a bit more dedication to get yourself up and running, so only really mentioned for completeness!0

Amazon AWS S3 is a fully redundant data storage infrastructure for storing and retrieving any amount of data. it is not a web hosting solution
Amazon Cloudfront is a CDS (content delivery service) which gives you a unique CloudFront.net domain name (e.g. abc123.cloudfront.net) and is not really a serious hosting solution0
