SKY TV Insurance...

We joined SKy last month and all has been well...

Had a call today from SKY inviting me to pay £8.99 per month to insure my sky tv, broadband and phone package.

I asked what this 9 quid got me and was told that if the sky box breaks then it's covered. So I pointed out that should the sky box break or fail to work, then I'll be on the phone to sky asking them to fix it.

The dimwit then told me that suppose something happened with the sky dish - like it fell off the roof etc, then it coveres me for that. But I pointed out that the sky dish was installed by a sky engineer, who I paid for under the "installation price" and should it fall off, then I expect SKY to come and put it back up again.

She then went on to say that should I fall over and drop a drink on my router or sky box then this too is covered. So I said it's covered on my house insurance for accidental damages etc.

It was at this point that I said "Listen flower, you get enough money out of me each month as it is, ta-raa..."

Chances are if they're calling within a year of you signing up then it's not actually Sky calling.
They will obviously know when your contract began and they cover you for most of the above scenarios for the first year of the contract, at which point the box, dish etc become yours (and your problem if they break).

There are a variety of scamming companies who will call up "about the sky box" (probably just war dialing all numbers on the off chance of you having sky - I don't think they have a list or anything). They tend to try to give the impression of being from Sky without ever actually saying "I'm from Sky".

If you have the caller line ID anywhere I suggest googling it and you're likely to find it's connected to a scam.

My most recent remote has a sticker referring to skyprotect.com on it and this is the only officially sanctioned extended warranty for Sky equipment and they claim to cover you "from £5.75".

"Got a call from these "A" Holes who are DOMESTIC AND GENERAL, all thanks to SKY giving out my phone number, I am EX DIRECTORY and do not want unsolicited calls. Only proves SKY CANNOT BE TRUSTED"

    In reply..

"I work for D&G, and would be part of the company calling you. If you don't pick up, you'll keep getting calls until you answer and actually speak to the person. If you actually listen to them you'll never hear them say they're from Sky- that's illegal. It's not an unsolicited call, it's in your Sky contract they are allowed to contact Sky customers on their behalf. If you don't want to be called at work DON'T GIVE SKY YOUR WORK NUMBER AS A CONTACT NUMBER. Pretty simple. I've never come across so many rude, ignorant people on the other end of the phone who just make assumptions as to who you are then scream at you down the phone. It's not hard to be polite is it."

From that site, a few pages in...
NEVER confirm personal details such as bank, national insurance, address or date of birth by any caller over the phone or internet

It annoys me when companies phone ME asking ME to confirm MY details.

"You phoned me, so you should have my details in front of you..."

I used to work for Domestic and General in their Sky department so just thought I would clarify that they are a genuine company who sky employs to offer extended waranty on their behalf. They are the only authorised company to offer insurance but there are lots of other companys that also do.

The reason they offer the insurance is because once you have had sky for a year, if anything goes wrong you have to pay £65 (or might be more now) for an engineer so some people prefer to pay monthly in case it breaks down and this also covers any equipment replacements. Sometimes D&G will offer you their insurance when your box is less than a year old but your years insurnace doesnt start til your equipment is a year old. ie when your manafacturors waranty expires so you get your full year plus if you take it out earlier they protect you for accidental damage. Hope that makes sense!

This was explained to me on the phone yesterday, but they didnt seem to understand that after 12 months is up, I could cancel and then re join sky to get all of the benefits ie 12 month warranty.

I had one of these calls yesterday, I reminded the advisor that im sure i get 12 months warranty anyway, if the sky box is poor enough to break after 12 months then i will join virgin, which im sure sky will then fight tooth and nail to keep me as customer...
