I suspect that their underwriters consider any 86 year old to be getting to be a pretty high risk.

Insurance went up about 32% in 2010.
HIgher risks went up more, lower risks less.
My FIL is 83 and whislt not all insurers will insure him, there is nothing at all to stop you using a comaprison site for those that do.

So, as all the higher risks are now under 30, and over 60, and only those inbetween are getting affordable quotes nowdays, which group do you think the most uninsured drivers will be in?

I just thought there was a code of practice... for example, if an insurer did not want a particular risk (for whatever reason) all they have to do is invite at something like £2000 forcing the customer away - But if nobody else will quote they will have no choice to pay the £2000 which is why some force of protection has to come into play.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

    Cheers!

I am not exactly sure what point you are trying to make, but from what I've personally seen, prices are most unaffordable for the under 20's and they are the group most likely to be uninsured.
A renewal at £521 at age 86 before shoping around does not mean it's unaffordable for anyone 60+, that's an enourmous leap.

But I'm not clear on your point.
    Why bring up uninsured drivers?

Some insurers (and other areas of financial services) do not like saying no to offering cover but will price it at silly amounts to effectively act as a blocker. Many people have posted on here over the years giving examples of that where an insurer prices 10 or 20 times more than the rest.

That said, £521 is not a passive blocker. Its a reflection of the risks.
