dmr-ex78 Freeview

We have a DMR-EX78 Panasonic recorder. Some time in the last three weeks (we normally watch tv via Virgin) we have lost the signal and can no longer pick up any channels. Our Sony TV is the same. However we have a phillips freeview receiver that is used upstairs and this works perfectly, both upstairs and down. Our aerial has a booster.

Anyone help?

Your analogue signal hasn't been turned off in your area, has it?

i have the Panasonic DMR-773 - it loses allits channels and set-up - i get the message 'no signal' but freebview is fine on the tv - just go and rescan as tho' its new - mine has lost its channels about six times - its been back to the store i bought it from - had a firmware upgrade - i still have the problem - its going back next week for a board swap and if its still losing channels thn i'm rejecting it and will get a new replacement - remember - sales of goods act states the store must prove the unit was not faulty when they sold it. I can' see how they can do that so i'm looking forwards to a new machine -happy days

But only for the first 6 months from purchase, after that the onus is on the purchaser to prove it has a manufacturing fault and that will entail getting an independent inspection done.

Well, down my way we're surrounded by posters exhorting us to retune on 1 Jun and 15 Jun to take account of some change they're making at the transmitters, so....

Have you been through the 'Scan for new channels' options, and also tried a full scan for all channels?

We have scanned at least 6 times. No signal strength. We took it upstairs and scanned. It still wouldnt find any channels. The only thing I can think of now is that a new large building has been errected a half a mile away in the direction the aerial is, could it be that. I suppose my other freeview box would be affected?

Taking it 'upstairs' won't make any difference, unless you're taking the aerial with you?

Are you using a set-top aerial, or do you have a loft-mounted or rooftop aerial as a permanent installation?

My granddad has a Panasonic Freeview/HDD/DVD recorder, I can't remember the model number. His was the same, no changes, but freeview signal just went. There was a faulty capacitor that had failed, and is a common failure. One little thing. With the help of Google I was able to find instructions to find this capacitor (right in the middle, lots to take apart) and was able to desolder it and put a higher spec one in instead. Box is still running today...

that was a good job, dave!

    Further analysis:

Under the board at that point is IC1508 and is probably the cause of the heating discolouration. [ albeit L1502, the large cylindrical inductor may be adding to it as it is in the line output of IC1508 ]

IC1508 is a 1.8V regulator feeding one of three voltages [ provided by other regulators] to the 'Back End Panel' which is the vertical panel immediately to the right of the hard drive on the wider view picture above.

The faulty capacitor and the L1502 inductor are the smoothing network for the IC1508 regulator output.

There are no circuitry details available for the 'Back End board' as it is regarded as unserviceable down to component level, so analysis can go no further in that regard... but the 'back end board' takes the IF output from the tuner... and loss of this 1.8V supply must effectively produce this ' no digital tuner output' effect.
