Housing Benefit Cheque gone astray at Bank

I paid in a cheque for £346.16 for my Housing Benefit on Saturday May 28th via the box in the branch. I filled out a slip and dropped it in. I checked with the bank this morning to see if it was clearing, and they told me they have no record of it.

I still have the slip, and they are going to check again, but what are my rights about this? I am due to pay my Housing Benefit on Tuesday and I don't know what to do?

Can I charge the bank for making a huge error and losing my cheque?

Thanks

Nick

Just heard that they have found it. What a surprise as I said to them I was going to charge them for the time I have had to spend on this matter.

They said the cheque would not be clear for another 5 days, and I said no way. It must be cleared by Monday evening as it was your fault and surprise, surprise they said yes.

    Off now for the night

Why not get the benefit paid DIRECTLY to your bank account?

Frankly, your rent is such an important part of you budget to rely on the efficiency of others, especially local authorities.

I tried doing that, but Poole Council just could not get it through their heads about it, so I gave in and take the cheque.:(
