WINDOWS XP/SP2 & BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH

Hi. i have mentioned this in relation to the release of SP2 on the freebie forum. I downloaded and installed SP2, switched my PC off and left it. My son switches it on the next day and it doesn't work properly - it gets to the user login screen but won't login and just sort of loops. Safe mode does the same thing. So I tell my son off for downloading a virus (whoops!!), reinstall XP (not a full install), and it works okay to a point.

Then I started to get "Blue Screens", which I have never seen on XP before. It says that "windows has detected a fault and is shutting down" - next line - "BUG-USB-DRIVER" then a lot of blurb saying "if this is the first time this has happened, blah, blah, blah..."

Someone on the freebie forum pointed out that SP2 is full of bugs and he/she had the same problem with the looping login screen.

This has happened a number of times but I am not sure it is the same "bug" every time.

Can anyone help out there?

I might be totally wrong here but I was looking at available updates a couple of days ago and SP2 was not yet available. I get automatic updates and was waiting for when it arrives. However looking at the microsoft site there is a download for SP2 "for IT professionals and developers". Could it be that you have downloaded that instead of the other and your computer is not compatible?

  • No, it was definitely SP2 for the Home edition. I have set mine to automatically notify for updates, so I didn't go looking for it, it found me!!

I don't think I want it when it arrives then!

Perhaps someone else can shed some light on your problem with it. ??? ::)

In laymans terms that means that it might not work properly so if you know what you're doing then give it a bash at your own peril.

If the error is a USB driver error, right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware and have a look at your USB devices in Device Manager. You could even remove them as they'll re-install on next boot up.
  • There is a similar problem with AMD 64 processors, caused by sp2, acknowledged by MS. I will try to find details.

SP2 installed with only 1 minor problem, it monitors Anti-Virus software from CA but not the CA Firewall.
    Everything else seems fine.
Check the list from Microsoft regarding possible conflicts with software.

I installed SP2 as well and had no problems whatsoever (and I have all kinds of gizmos and rubbish software on my PC) Just to re-assure anyone who has been put off downloading SP2.
